Grade 5 Curriculum Overview

English

Students continue developing literacy skills through:

  • Reading increasingly complex fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Writing multi-paragraph compositions
  • Research and inquiry projects
  • Oral presentations and discussions
  • Media literacy and critical thinking

Students should be able to organize ideas logically, support opinions with evidence, and communicate effectively in written and oral formats.

Mathematics

Students learn:

  • Whole numbers up to 100,000
  • Decimals, fractions, and percentages
  • Multi-step problem solving
  • Introduction to algebraic equations
  • Probability and data management
  • Coding and mathematical modelling
  • Financial literacy concepts

Students should know multiplication facts up to 12 × 12, and apply them in increasingly complex situations.

Science and Technology

Students investigate:

  • Human organ systems
  • Conservation of energy and resources
  • Forces acting on structures and mechanisms
  • Properties of matter

Students begin using scientific inquiry and engineering design processes more independently.

Social Studies

  • Heritage and Identity: First Nations and Europeans in early Canada
  • People and Environments: Interactions between humans and the environment

Students examine Indigenous perspectives and the historical development of Canadian communities.

Health and Physical Education

Students learn:

  • Physical fitness and movement skills
  • Healthy eating and nutrition
  • Mental health awareness
  • Online safety
  • Human development and puberty
  • Consent and healthy relationships

Health education includes age-appropriate instructions on physical and emotional changes.

The Arts

Students develop skills in:

  • Visual Arts
  • Music
  • Drama
  • Dance

Emphasis is placed on creativity, interpretation, and artistic communication.

Core French

Students continue building:

  • Vocabulary
  • Conversational skills
  • Listening comprehension
  • Reading and writing in French

Core French is basic level and mandatory from Grade 4 onward.
